Biography

Ann Gillis, born Alma Mabel Conner, was an American actress. She was born on 12 February 1927 in Little Rock, Arkansas, and began her career as a child performer in the mid-1930s. After uncredited appearances in several films, she took her first substantial role in King of Hockey (1936).

Gillis appeared in numerous Hollywood productions through the 1940s, often in supporting parts. Her credits include Becky Thatcher in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938), the title role in Little Orphan Annie (1938), and the voice of the adolescent Faline in Bambi (1942). She later played Poole's mother in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). She also made occasional television appearances, including episodes of The Saint. Gillis retired from film work in the late 1940s and died on 31 January 2018 in Horam, East Sussex, England.
