Fi1m perspective

We like Bronson Pinchot's accents and physical comedy, but True Romance gives us another reason to watch him. Hearing his natural voice is a welcome change from the eccentric supporting characters for which he is known.

Pinchot often gives us an accent and an emphatic mannerism to notice straight away. We like the comic boldness, though there is a danger that the voice becomes all we listen for. Serge in Beverly Hills Cop (1984), alongside Eddie Murphy, established the appeal of that eccentric supporting turn. Perfect Strangers (1986–1993) gave him a longer opportunity as Balki Bartokomous, with Mark Linn-Baker alongside him. His physical comedy matters there as much as the distinctive voice; it is worth remembering that he has more than one way of making himself conspicuous.

True Romance (1993) is the useful change of direction, casting him as Elliot Blitzer in a dramatic supporting part and letting him use his natural voice. We were won over by the film because Tony Scott makes its reckless lovers worth caring about while letting the supporting cast keep interrupting them. Pinchot belongs to that busy company, and hearing him without an adopted accent is a small pleasure in a film with plenty of them. The cruelty sometimes feels smug, a reservation that affection for the cast cannot erase. Even with that caveat, this is where we would send someone who knows him only as Balki.

He returned to Serge in Beverly Hills Cop III (1994) and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024). That is a long acquaintance with one comic character. We would still rather see what happens when he is asked to put the familiar voice aside.

His later career has continued through supporting film parts and television guest roles, so the quality of the surrounding cast and writing remains important. In The Residence (2025), he plays Didier Gotthard in a crowded White House mystery whose strongest attraction is Uzo Aduba's detective. The comedy is less reliable, and eight episodes leave far too much opportunity for the mystery to interrupt itself when it ought to be getting on with things. His presence is a reason to take an interest, but the uneven comedy is a reason to keep expectations modest. For a stronger introduction to his work beyond sitcoms, begin with True Romance.
