Biography
Carl Mayer (20 November 1894 – 1 July 1944) was an Austrian screenwriter. He was born in Graz, Styria, Austria-Hungary, and died in London. His screenplays include The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), co-written with Hans Janowitz, and Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927).
Mayer wrote or co-wrote the screenplays for several films directed by F. W. Murnau, including The Last Laugh (1924), Tartuffe (1926) and 4 Devils (1928). He also contributed to The Haunted Castle (1921) and Genuine: The Tragedy of a Vampire (1920). His work was associated with German Expressionist cinema and the Kammerspielfilm.
