Christopher Chulack’s strength is keeping complicated action clear without forgetting the people involved. His substantial contribution to ER is worth seeking out, with the caveat that its crowded storytelling can sometimes wear us down.

In ER (1994), capable people have to do difficult work without becoming infallible. We were gripped because the ensemble made us care about people who could get things wrong. The crowded storytelling sometimes wore us down, but the characters kept us watching. Christopher Chulack joined as a producer and director in the first season and went on to direct 43 episodes, making him a substantial contributor to a programme we recommend warmly.
In the episode Hell and High Water (1995), he handles technically complex action without losing narrative clarity. That matters in a series already asking us to follow so many people. His interest in convincing procedures and what characters experience during the action helps explain why this material suits him. We want to understand what a difficult job involves, and to care about the person trying to get it done.
That combination of directing and sustained producing work continues through Third Watch (1999) and Southland (2009). Chulack co-developed the former with John Wells, a recurring collaborator on ER and Southland too, and directed both pilots. These programmes keep him among emergency services and law enforcement teams; SEAL Team (2017) takes that interest into military drama. There, his use of technical advisers serves a practical purpose: keeping procedures credible while making room for what the men and women doing the work are experiencing.
There is a limit to how much of this we should credit to one director. The ensemble is central to what we admire in ER, and assured handling of action does not cure the fatigue that its crowded stories occasionally cause. Chulack is nevertheless a useful name to notice in the credits when a drama needs to keep several people distinct under pressure. Start with ER, allowing for the concentration its crowded storytelling demands.
Biography
Christopher Chulack is an American television director and producer. He began working on the NBC medical drama series ER (1994) as a director and producer from the first season, later serving in various executive producer roles and directing 43 episodes across its run.
He created the police drama Southland (2009–2013) and has directed episodes of series including Third Watch (1999), Shameless (2011), Longmire (2012), Animal Kingdom (2016) and SEAL Team (2017). Chulack has received two Primetime Emmy Awards and multiple nominations for his work on ER.
