Biography
J. Michael Muro, also credited as Jimmy Muro, Jim Muro and James Muro, is an American cinematographer, camera operator and director. He began his career in the camera department and worked extensively as a Steadicam operator on films including The Abyss (1989), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), True Lies (1994), Titanic (1997) and Dances with Wolves (1990).
Muro made his directorial debut with the 1987 horror film Street Trash. He transitioned to director of photography on Kevin Costner’s Open Range (2003) and has since shot features including Crash (2004), Roll Bounce (2005), Rush Hour 3 (2007), Parker (2013) and Billionaire Boys Club (2018). He has also directed episodes of television series such as Longmire and SEAL Team.
In 2024 Muro served as cinematographer on Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 and its sequel, continuing a long professional association that began in the late 1980s.
