Biography
Clara Blandick was an American character actress of stage and screen, born Clara Blanchard Dickey on 4 June 1876 aboard an American ship in Hong Kong harbour. She began her acting career on the stage around 1900, making her Broadway debut in 1912, and appeared in early silent films before focusing primarily on theatre. She returned to film work in the sound era.
Blandick is best known for playing Auntie Em in The Wizard of Oz (1939). Her other film credits include uncredited or supporting roles in A Star Is Born (1937), Drums Along the Mohawk (1939), The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1932), The Big Store (1941), Heaven Can Wait (1943), Life with Father (1947) and Gentleman Jim (1942). She continued working in supporting parts until 1950.
She died on 15 April 1962 in Hollywood, California.
