Connie Britton makes capable women worth listening to. We rate her directness highly in Friday Night Lights; in The White Lotus, she brings enough nuance to an entitled mother to keep us interested without asking for our approval.

In Friday Night Lights (2006), Connie Britton’s Tami Taylor gives Kyle Chandler’s authority some useful competition. As the coach’s wife and a guidance counsellor, she has responsibilities of her own, and Britton’s directness makes them worth our attention. We were grateful for her plain speaking when the series grew solemn about the difficulties of growing up. She helps make this a community of adults and children with competing needs, rather than a programme in which one man has all the sense.
The television breakthrough of Friday Night Lights followed a feature debut in The Brothers McMullen (1995) and a part in the film of Friday Night Lights (2004). Leading roles followed in American Horror Story: Murder House (2011) and Nashville (2012), where she played country music star Rayna Jaymes. Yet the recurring interest is in women managing family, work and the demands of other people, which makes the entitled Nicole Mossbacher a useful turn.
The White Lotus (2021) gives that familiar professional mother a less reassuring use. Britton brings nuance to Nicole’s entitlement, enough to make her worth watching without needing to make her agreeable. Mike White’s resort satire is funny and cruel, but its tenderness towards difficult people matters too; Britton fits that mixture. There is a limit to our enthusiasm for the series’ emphasis on its guests at the expense of its workers. Her performance is a reason to attend to one of those guests, though it does not make the imbalance disappear.
The reservation about Britton is how often the casting returns to similar maternal or suburban figures. Familiarity can make an actor seem less interesting before she has done anything, and we would like to see more work that does not rely on that immediate recognition. Still, the partnership with Chandler shows why these roles need someone as direct as she is: Tami keeps his patient authority from becoming the programme’s only adult point of view. Begin with Friday Night Lights, and forgive the stretches when its earnestness slows things down.

Connie Britton is an American actress. She studied Asian studies at Dartmouth College and trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York under Sanford Meisner.
Britton is known for her role as Nikki Faber in the series Spin City (1996–2000) and as Tami Taylor in Friday Night Lights (2006–2011). She played Nicole Mossbacher in the first season of The White Lotus (2021) and has appeared in films including Promising Young Woman (2020) and Bombshell (2019). She has received several Primetime Emmy nominations for her television performances.
