We rate Eliza Dushku most highly as Faith, where physical confidence leaves room for sympathy. The later tendency to cast her as another tough outsider can make a distinctive performer look needlessly predictable.

Faith is a rogue Slayer in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Eliza Dushku does not have to make her agreeable to make her worth watching. Her commitment to the physical side of acting helps, but the sympathy she finds for this flawed character matters more. We were surprised by how much we cared about Faith, given how difficult she can be. In a series whose supernatural plotting is uneven, Dushku gives us someone to stay for.
The early film work includes Pearl in This Boy's Life (1993) and Dana, the daughter of the central couple, in James Cameron's True Lies (1994). We like Cameron's inventive action and the comic cast, but the long, cruel marital detour makes it a qualified recommendation. Dana is not the role we would choose to explain Dushku's appeal. The more revealing shift is from those supporting film parts to a recurring television character with enough room for conflicting feelings.
Faith became her breakthrough when she joined the series in 1998, and tough outsiders became a recurring casting choice afterwards. That is an understandable response to a performer with her physical commitment, though it risks treating her capacity for sympathy as an optional extra. A part that gives her only defiance is asking for less than she can do.
Bring It On (2000), with Dushku as Missy Pantone, offered a lighter ensemble setting for that physical commitment. Leading television roles followed in Tru Calling (2003–2005) and Dollhouse (2009–2010), the latter created by Joss Whedon. As Echo in Dollhouse, she played multiple personas and also served as a producer. That gave her a chance to work beyond the familiar outsider casting, though variety alone is not a reason to prefer a performance. Start with Buffy, and allow some patience for the supernatural plotting.

Eliza Dushku is an American actress. She was born on 30 December 1980 in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Watertown. She began acting as a child, appearing in That Night (1992), This Boy's Life (1993) and True Lies (1994).
Dushku starred as Faith in the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1998–2003) and its spin-off Angel (2000–2003). She later led Tru Calling (2003–2005) and Dollhouse (2009–2010), and appeared in films including Bring It On (2000), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) and Wrong Turn (2003). She also had guest roles in series such as That '70s Show and Banshee.
Dushku retired from acting in 2017. She holds a master's degree in counselling and works as a therapist and mental health advocate.
