Biography
George Chandler (30 June 1898 – 10 June 1985) was an American actor who appeared in over 140 feature films, usually in smaller supporting roles. Born in Waukegan, Illinois, he began his performing career with a vaudeville act billed as 'George Chandler, the Musical Nut', which featured comedy and violin playing. He made his screen debut in 1929 and served in the United States Army during the First World War.
Chandler is perhaps best known for playing Uncle Petrie Martin on the television series Lassie. He also appeared in numerous other television series from the 1950s onwards. In 1960 he was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild, serving until 1963. He died of cancer in Panorama City, California.
