Biography
George Henry Irving (5 October 1874 – 11 September 1961) was an American actor and director. He began his career as a theatre actor before moving to Hollywood in 1914. Initially working as an actor-director, he directed around 35 silent films before concentrating exclusively on acting from the mid-1920s onwards.
Irving appeared in over 250 films, typically in supporting roles as stern figures of authority. He is known for his performances as Robert Wentworth in Coquette (1929) and as the lawyer Alexander Peabody in Bringing Up Baby (1938). His screen credits also include A Night at the Opera (1935), Wings (1927) and Island of Lost Souls (1932).
He continued working into the 1950s with occasional television roles.
