Biography
Harvey Fierstein is an American actor, playwright and voice actor. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he began his career in New York theatre and gained prominence for writing and starring in the play Torch Song Trilogy.
Fierstein won Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Actor in a Play for Torch Song Trilogy, Best Book of a Musical for La Cage aux Folles, and Best Actor in a Musical for playing Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. He also wrote the book for the Tony-winning musical Kinky Boots and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2007.
On screen he has appeared in films including Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) as Frank and Bullets Over Broadway (1994) as Sid Loomis, and provided voices for characters in Mulan (1998) and Independence Day (1996).
