Biography
Herman J. Mankiewicz was an American screenwriter and journalist. Born in New York City, he worked as a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune in Berlin and later as a drama critic for The New York Times and The New Yorker before moving to Hollywood in the mid-1920s.
He is best known for co-writing the screenplay for Citizen Kane (1941) with Orson Welles; the pair received the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Mankiewicz also contributed to Dinner at Eight (1933), The Pride of the Yankees (1942) and numerous other films, often working uncredited to revise scripts. He was the older brother of director and screenwriter Joseph L. Mankiewicz.
