Biography
Hilton McRae is a Scottish actor who works in theatre, television and film. Born on 28 December 1949 in Dundee, he studied at the University of Edinburgh and was a member of the radical theatre group 7:84 before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1977. He has focused mainly on avant-garde and political theatre.
His film roles include Sam in The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), Willy in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984), Arthur Greenwood in Darkest Hour (2017), Jacob Smallbury in Far from the Madding Crowd (2015) and Macdonwald in Macbeth (2015). On television he has appeared as Judge Milan Kadnikov in Chernobyl (2019) and provided the voice of Hierarch Regret in Halo (2022). He played Arvel Crynyd (uncredited) in Return of the Jedi (1983).
McRae is married to actress Lindsay Duncan.
