Biography
Howard Close Hickman (also credited as Howard C. Hickman and Howard Charles Hickman) was an American actor, director and writer. He began his career on stage in 1900 and became a leading man in repertory theatre before entering films around 1912 through producer Thomas H. Ince. He directed 19 films and appeared in several productions with his wife, actress Bessie Barriscale.
With the advent of sound films, Hickman took mostly small supporting roles, often as judges, doctors or other authority figures. He appeared as Captain in Here Comes the Navy (1934) and as John Wilkes in Gone with the Wind (1939). He made more than 270 films before retiring in 1944.
Hickman was born on 9 February 1880 in Columbia, Missouri, and died on 31 December 1949 in San Anselmo, California.
