Hugh Dancy makes intelligent men interesting without making their motives easy to read. We rate his restraint, especially in darker work, though Martha Marcy May Marlene also shows the limits of what he can do with an underwritten part.

In Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011), getting away from a cult does not make the domestic scenes comfortable. Hugh Dancy's Ted and Sarah Paulson's Lucy give those scenes enough friction to hold our attention even when Sean Durkin's shifts between past and present become too insistent. We felt uneasy even when Martha appeared safe, because the actors make domestic life difficult rather than reassuring. Dancy is good here at helping to sustain a scene without being its main attraction.
Earlier films made different use of him. Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down (2001) brought wider attention, while Ella Enchanted (2004) cast him as Prince Charmont opposite Anne Hathaway. The title role in the independent drama Adam (2009) offered another direction. The more interesting thread through this mixed career is his restraint: he is well suited to characters whose motives remain difficult to read, and he need not advertise every complication.
Martha Marcy May Marlene also shows the limits of that restraint. Durkin gives Ted and Lucy less complexity than Martha, and Dancy cannot supply everything the script has left out. Elizabeth Olsen's Martha deserves the attention, but a little more time with the people around her would have helped. Lucy's difficulty understanding her sister becomes a repeated source of tension, leaving Paulson and Dancy to keep the encounters engaging when the writing has too little new to tell us.
Television gave him more room with Will Graham, the troubled FBI profiler opposite Mads Mikkelsen in Bryan Fuller's Hannibal (2013–2015). That three-season leading role made psychological difficulty central to the work, rather than something Dancy had to establish at the edges of somebody else's story. It is a sensible next stop for anyone drawn to the unease he brings to quieter material. For a shorter introduction, try Martha Marcy May Marlene, accepting that Ted gets less attention than he deserves.

Hugh Dancy is an English actor. Born on 19 June 1975 in Staffordshire, England, he trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
His film roles include Schmid in Black Hawk Down (2001), Galahad in King Arthur (2004), Char in Ella Enchanted (2004), Luke Brandon in Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009) and Ted in Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011). On television he has played Will Graham in Hannibal (2013–2015), Cal Roberts in The Path (2016–2018) and Nolan Price in Law & Order (2022–present).
Dancy received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for portraying Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, in the miniseries Elizabeth I (2005).
