Biography
Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) was a Russian-born composer, pianist and conductor. He became a French citizen in 1934 and an American citizen in 1945.
Stravinsky studied law before training in composition with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. His early ballets The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911) and The Rite of Spring (1913), commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes, established his international reputation. The premiere of The Rite of Spring in Paris provoked audience unrest.
He provided music for the Disney film Fantasia (1940), which featured The Rite of Spring. Later works include the opera The Rake's Progress (1951). Stravinsky died in New York on 6 April 1971.
