Biography
Irene Mecchi is an American screenwriter and playwright. She co-wrote the screenplay for the 1994 Disney animated film The Lion King with Jonathan Roberts and Linda Woolverton.
She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in theatre and studied at the American Conservatory Theater. Mecchi began her association with Disney in 1992, writing the short film Recycle Rex, before contributing to The Lion King.
She later co-wrote the screenplays for The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) and Hercules (1997). With Roger Allers she wrote the book for the stage musical adaptation of The Lion King, receiving a 1998 Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical. Other credits include the screenplay for Brave (2012).
