Jacki Weaver makes family authority convincing, even when it becomes frightening. We value how she suggests years of shared life in a supporting part, though we would like casting directors to look beyond the mothers and matriarchs.

In Animal Kingdom (2010), Jacki Weaver’s Janine ‘Smurf’ Cody presides over her sons with an authority they recognise as part of family life. She remains credible as their mother even as her ruthlessness makes that authority frightening. We were unsettled by how ordinary she made the household’s loyalty feel: her sons belong there, and that is part of the trouble. David Michôd gives the family ties enough weight to sustain the threat without much action, and Weaver never needs to make Smurf seem like a different species from the rest of us.
That performance brought international recognition after decades of Australian stage, film and television work. Her earlier films included Stork (1971) and Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), during the Australian New Wave. The subsequent American work has extended from Silver Linings Playbook (2012) to a recurring television part as Caroline Warner in Yellowstone, beginning in 2021.
Silver Linings Playbook shows how useful the same attention to family habit can be in a less threatening household. As Dolores Solatano, opposite Robert De Niro’s Pat Sr., Weaver helps suggest irritation that has been accumulating for years rather than starting when the scene does. David O. Russell allows the ensemble enough comic freedom to keep the house busy without making every member equally endearing. Her contribution is easy to underestimate precisely because the family seems so used to having her there.
Repeatedly casting Weaver as a mother risks making familiar work out of something she does unusually well. These performances work because the directors allow the families to be difficult, and she never has to make them more agreeable for our sake. We have reservations about both films, particularly Michôd’s slackening second half and Russell’s overly reassuring writing, but neither is a reason to pass over her work. Start with Animal Kingdom, provided an uncomfortable evening among relatives is what you had in mind.

Jacki Weaver is an Australian actress known for her work in theatre, film and television. Born Jacqueline Ruth Weaver on 25 May 1947 in Sydney, she began her career in the 1960s and gained prominence in the 1970s during the Australian New Wave with roles in films such as Stork (1971), Alvin Purple (1973) and Petersen (1974).
She received international attention for her performances as Janine 'Smurf' Cody in the crime film Animal Kingdom (2010) and as Dolores Solatano in Silver Linings Playbook (2012), earning Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for both. Weaver has appeared in later films including Magic in the Moonlight (2014), The Disaster Artist (2017), Bird Box (2018) and Widows (2018), and on television in series such as Yellowstone.
