Biography
John D.F. Black was an American screenwriter, television producer and director. He attended Carnegie Mellon University and served in the US Army during the Korean War.
Black served as associate producer on ten episodes of the first season of Star Trek (1966) and wrote the teleplay for the episode 'The Naked Time'. He contributed to the series' opening monologue. He also wrote episodes of Mission: Impossible (1966), Hawaii Five-O (1968), Charlie's Angels (1976) and Murder, She Wrote (1984).
His film credits include co-writing the screenplay for Shaft (1971) and writing and executive producing Trouble Man (1972). He received a Writers Guild of America award for an episode of Mr. Novak, an Emmy nomination for the television film Thief (1971) and an Edgar Award for the same script. He later contributed story credits to Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) under the pseudonym Ralph Wills.
