Biography

John Hodge is a Scottish screenwriter and dramatist. Born in Glasgow in 1964, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh before turning to writing. He began his screenwriting career after meeting producer Andrew Macdonald at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 1991.

Hodge's first produced screenplay was Shallow Grave (1994), directed by Danny Boyle and starring Ewan McGregor. He adapted Irvine Welsh's novel for Trainspotting (1996), which earned him a BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and an Academy Award nomination. Subsequent collaborations with Boyle include A Life Less Ordinary (1997), The Beach (2000), Trance (2013) and T2 Trainspotting (2017). His play Collaborators won the 2012 Olivier Award for Best New Play.
