Biography
John Savage is an American actor born John Smeallie Youngs on 25 August 1949 in Old Bethpage, New York. He trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and began his career on stage, including work with the Manhattan Children's Theatre Group and a Broadway production of David Mamet's American Buffalo in the late 1970s.
He rose to prominence in the late 1970s with roles as Steven Pushkov in The Deer Hunter (1978), Claude Hooper Bukowski in Hair (1979) and Detective Karl Hettinger in The Onion Field (1979). His later credits include appearances in The Thin Red Line (1998), The Godfather Part III (1990), Do the Right Thing (1989) and the television series Twin Peaks (1990 and 2017), Dark Angel (2000–2002) and Goliath (2018). He has also worked as a producer and composer.
