Biography
Joseph LaShelle (also credited as Joseph Wellington LaShelle and variants) was an American cinematographer. Born in Los Angeles, he entered the film industry in 1920 as a laboratory assistant at Paramount and worked his way up through camera roles at several studios before becoming a director of photography in 1943.
He shot Laura (1944) for Otto Preminger, winning the Academy Award for Best Cinematography (Black-and-White). He received eight further Oscar nominations, including for Marty (1955), The Apartment (1960) and Irma la Douce (1963). Other notable credits include How Green Was My Valley (1941, camera operator), River of No Return (1954), How the West Was Won (1962) and The Fortune Cookie (1966). He also worked on episodes of The Twilight Zone.
