Justin Berfield is a good ensemble comedian whose timing and physical energy make Reese's stupidity funny. His return to the role is welcome, though the reunion gives him too little to do.

Reese is a dim-witted older brother and a bully, which gives Justin Berfield plenty to work with in Malcolm in the Middle (2000–2006). His strength is the physical business: the gags and schemes need comic timing, and he supplies it. Alongside Frankie Muniz's Malcolm, he is an effective part of the family ensemble.
He had already spent Unhappily Ever After (1995–1999) playing Ross Malloy, the youngest son in another dysfunctional household. Those two long sitcom runs account for much of the acting career, and they explain why ensemble comedy is the sensible place to judge him. After the latter ended, he largely left acting for producing, working with Jason Felts. The move gives us little further performance work to weigh against Reese.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair (2026) returns him to Reese, but it is an uneven way to assess what he can do now. Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek make the reunion worth watching; the four-episode format does Berfield fewer favours. Reese and Christopher Masterson's Francis are competing for space in an already crowded ensemble. Too often, the programme gives a character an appearance when they need something substantial to do.
We were frustrated by how little room the reunion leaves for its supporting cast. Steve Welch's editing cannot make the four instalments feel comfortably shaped, and the switches between family uproar and personal reflection make the crowding harder to overlook. Malcolm spends too much time explaining the effects of his childhood. That leaves an actor whose strengths are timing and physical comedy in a programme with too much explaining and too little space.
For Berfield, start with the original Malcolm in the Middle and the sustained work of keeping those brothers funny together. The reunion is worth watching, but it is a poor basis for deciding how much more he has to offer. If there is another acting role, give him a scheme and time to get it wrong.
Biography
Justin Tyler Berfield (born 25 February 1986) is an American actor, writer and producer. He is known for playing Reese in the Fox sitcom Malcolm in the Middle (2000–2006) and Ross Malloy in the WB series Unhappily Ever After (1995–1999). He began acting at the age of five, appearing in national television commercials, and made his television debut in the short-lived series The Good Life (1994).
Berfield reprised the role of Reese in the four-part revival series Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair (2026). He has also worked as a producer and co-founded the production companies J2 Entertainment and J2TV. He served as Chief Creative Officer of Virgin Produced, the film and television arm of the Virgin Group, from around 2010.
