Biography

Lionel Belmore was an English character actor and director. He appeared on stage for more than twenty-five years with actors including Wilson Barrett, Sir Henry Irving, William Faversham and Lily Langtry. He entered films in 1911 and directed several shorts between 1914 and 1920 before concentrating on acting.

Belmore appeared in around 200 films, often in supporting roles. He played the Burgomaster in Frankenstein (1931) and the Prime Minister in The Love Parade (1929). Other credits include The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) and Son of Frankenstein (1939).

He was married to stage actress Emmeline Florence Carder and had two daughters. Belmore died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, in 1953.
