Biography
Max Goldstein (1925–2008), known professionally as Mago, was a Swedish costume designer and production designer. Born in Berlin, he moved to Sweden as a child in 1939 and began his career in theatre and revue design in the late 1940s, contributing to stage productions in Stockholm.
He collaborated extensively with Ingmar Bergman, designing costumes for thirteen films between 1953 and 1998, beginning with Sawdust and Tinsel (1953) and including Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), Through a Glass Darkly (1961), Winter Light (1963), Persona (1966), Shame (1968) and The Passion of Anna (1969).
Mago also worked on other Swedish films and international productions, notably creating costumes for Marlene Dietrich in Just a Gigolo (1978). He published memoirs in 1988 and died in Stockholm on 4 April 2008.
