Biography
Max von Sydow was a Swedish actor. Born Carl Adolf von Sydow in Lund, Sweden, on 10 April 1929, he died on 8 March 2020. He trained at the Royal Dramatic Theatre's acting school in Stockholm from 1948 to 1951 and began his career in Swedish theatre and film.
He became internationally known through his long collaboration with Ingmar Bergman, appearing in eleven of the director's films beginning with The Seventh Seal (1957). His other notable early roles include Jesus in The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) and Father Lankester Merrin in The Exorcist (1973). He later worked in many languages across European and American productions.
Von Sydow received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor for Pelle the Conqueror (1987) and Best Supporting Actor for Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011). Among his later credits are roles in Minority Report (2002), Shutter Island (2010), Robin Hood (2010), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and the television series Game of Thrones (2011).
