Michael Beach

In Saw X (2023), Michael Beach’s Henry Kessler tells a sick man about getting well. Tobin Bell listens, and for a while a film built around elaborate injury has time for a conversation. It is a small example of what we value in Beach: he can take his place without insisting that a scene become his. Director and editor Kevin Greutert allows this opening stretch to proceed slowly, and Beach belongs comfortably within it. We have reservations about the film’s length, but not about its willingness to let people sit and talk before the machinery starts.

The more substantial reason to watch him is Carl Franklin’s One False Move (1992), where he plays the coldly methodical criminal Pluto. Beach fits alongside Thornton’s Ray Malcolm and Cynda Williams’s Fantasia without making his menace an invitation to admire the acting. We were moved by Williams’s distress, which stays present even as the chase needs to move forward. Beach belongs to the same convincing ensemble, helping to make the danger credible without drawing attention away from the people in its path. Franklin gets performances that work together, and Beach’s contribution matters even though Williams and Bill Paxton provide much of the film’s unusual feeling.

After smaller roles in End of the Line (1987) and Lean on Me (1989), One False Move brought Beach notice and, for a time, restrictive casting. Waiting to Exhale (1995) raised his profile as an unfaithful husband. Soul Food (1997), opposite Vanessa L. Williams, returned him to domestic drama. Television gave him sustained work: he appeared in ER from 1995 to 1997 and played the paramedic Doc Parker in Third Watch from 1999 to 2005.

His frequent casting as officers and other authority figures makes sense, but it also risks making him too easy to place before he has spoken. We would welcome more parts that give him something beyond a uniform or a threat to work with. Start with One False Move, where Franklin gives the whole cast reasons to hold our attention.
