Biography
Paul Schrader is an American screenwriter, film director and critic. He wrote the screenplay for Taxi Driver (1976) and the screenplay for Raging Bull (1980).
Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Schrader attended Calvin College and studied film at UCLA. He worked as a film critic and scholar, publishing Transcendental Style in Film: Ozu, Bresson, Dreyer (1972), before beginning screenwriting in 1974. He made his directorial debut with Blue Collar (1978), co-written with his brother Leonard Schrader.
Schrader has directed numerous films, including American Gigolo (1980), Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) and First Reformed (2017). He has collaborated repeatedly with Martin Scorsese on screenplays including The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and Bringing Out the Dead (1999).
