Biography
Paul Williams is an American composer, singer, songwriter and actor. Born on 19 September 1940 in Omaha, Nebraska, he is best known for his songwriting in the 1970s, including hits performed by the Carpenters and Three Dog Night, and for his contributions to film scores and songs.
His film work includes original music and songs for Phantom of the Paradise (1974), Bugsy Malone (1976), A Star Is Born (1976) and The Muppet Movie (1979). He also appeared as an actor, notably as Virgil in Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) and as Swan in Phantom of the Paradise.
Williams has received an Academy Award and a Grammy Award for the song 'Evergreen'. Since 2009 he has served as president and chairman of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
