Biography
Raymond Thornton Chandler (1888–1959) was an American novelist and screenwriter. He is best known for his detective novels featuring private investigator Philip Marlowe and for his work on several Hollywood screenplays.
Chandler began publishing short stories in the pulp magazine Black Mask in 1933. His first novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939. He worked as a screenwriter from 1943, with credits including the screenplay for Double Indemnity (1944, with Billy Wilder), The Blue Dahlia (1946) and Strangers on a Train (1951).
