Biography
Richard Hale (born James Richards Hale; 16 November 1892 – 18 May 1981) was an American actor, opera singer and narrator. Born in Rogersville, Tennessee, he attended Columbia University on a singing scholarship and graduated in 1914. He began in theatre with Minnie Maddern Fiske's company before pursuing a career as a baritone in opera and concert performance, later turning increasingly to acting in film, stage and television.
Hale's film roles include the Soothsayer in Julius Caesar (1953), Nathan Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Gaspar in Ben-Hur (1959) and A.A. Adamson in Family Plot (1976). He appeared in All the King's Men (1949), Friendly Persuasion (1956) and The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima (1952), and made guest appearances in series such as Star Trek (1966), Bonanza (1959) and Perry Mason (1957). His appearance often led to casting as Middle Eastern or Native American characters.
