Biography
Richard Macdonald (1 June 1919 – 29 May 1993) was a British production designer. Born in Yeovil, Somerset, he studied at the West of England College of Art in Bristol and the Royal College of Art. He taught painting at Leeds College of Art and Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts before entering film work in the mid-1950s.
He collaborated extensively with director Joseph Losey from The Sleeping Tiger (1954) through Galileo (1975), with early credits sometimes uncredited or as design consultant. In the mid-1970s he moved to Hollywood, where his credits included The Day of the Locust (1975), Marathon Man (1976), Altered States (1980), Coming to America (1988), The Addams Family (1991), Jennifer Eight (1992) and The Firm (1993).
He received three BAFTA nominations for Best Production Design or Art Direction, for King and Country (1964), The Day of the Locust (1975) and The Addams Family (1991). He was married to costume designer Ruth Myers.
