Biography
Robert Bolt (1924–1995) was an English playwright and screenwriter. He wrote the screenplay for Lawrence of Arabia (1962), directed by David Lean, and adapted his own stage play A Man for All Seasons (1960) for the 1966 film version.
Bolt was born in Sale, Cheshire, and studied history at the University of Manchester. He worked as a schoolteacher until the success of his play Flowering Cherry (1958) allowed him to write full time. His other notable screenplays include Doctor Zhivago (1965), Ryan's Daughter (1970), The Bounty (1984) and The Mission (1986). He also wrote and directed Lady Caroline Lamb (1972).
Bolt received Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay for Doctor Zhivago and A Man for All Seasons, as well as BAFTA Awards and other honours.
