Biography
S. N. Behrman (Samuel Nathaniel Behrman) was an American playwright and screenwriter. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard University and Columbia University before establishing himself as a writer for magazines including The New Yorker.
Behrman was a leading author of Broadway high comedies from the late 1920s to the 1940s, with works often produced by the Theatre Guild. In Hollywood he wrote or contributed to screenplays including Queen Christina (1934), Anna Karenina (1935), A Tale of Two Cities (1935) and Waterloo Bridge (1940). He also wrote biographies and memoirs.
Behrman died in New York City in 1973. He was married to Elza Heifetz Behrman and was the father of composer David Behrman.
