Biography
Sacha Vierny (10 August 1919 – 15 May 2001) was a French cinematographer. Born in Bois-le-Roi, Seine-et-Marne, he trained at the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques (IDHEC) in Paris.
He first collaborated with Alain Resnais as assistant cameraman on the 1955 documentary Night and Fog, and subsequently shot ten films with the director from 1955 to 1984, including Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) and Last Year at Marienbad (1961). From 1985 he served as cinematographer on nearly all of Peter Greenaway’s projects, among them A Zed & Two Noughts (1985), The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) and Prospero’s Books (1991). Vierny also worked with directors including Luis Buñuel on Belle de Jour (1967), Raoul Ruiz and Chris Marker.
