Tom Tykwer makes looping stories lively through the close coordination of images, cutting and music. We recommend Run Lola Run warmly, while finding its urgent rescue mission more convincing than its thoughts about fate.

The camera keeps moving as Lola runs, and the soundtrack keeps pushing her on. In Run Lola Run (1998), Tykwer gives her twenty minutes to save her boyfriend and tries three versions of the attempt. The variations are easy to follow, even as he switches between kinds of image. Franka Potente’s determination gives us someone to care about amid all this rearranging, and the film remains funny without becoming a demonstration of its own ingenuity.
After Deadly Maria (1993) and Winter Sleepers (1997), Run Lola Run brought him international success. He then moved into adaptations, including Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006), with its attempt to put scent and obsession on screen. Co-directing Cloud Atlas (2012) with the Wachowskis gave his interest in connected stories a multi-era structure to work with. Those choices make sense for a director drawn to repetition and alternative possibilities.
Much of Run Lola Run’s precision comes from its collaborators. Cinematographer Frank Griebe keeps Lola clear through the camera movements, while editor Mathilde Bonnefoy makes us notice the differences between runs. The techno score by Tykwer, Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek works tightly with her cutting; Alexander Manasse’s production design lets Berlin remain somewhere to cross rather than somewhere to admire. We were exhilarated by the running because the beat and the cuts made another attempt feel urgent.
The reservations begin when Tykwer’s screenplay asks its variations to tell us much about fate. Events fit together too conveniently, and restarting the story can reduce our concern about what has happened. The film remains warm and funny, but we can see too plainly how the events have been arranged to make each version work.
Co-creating, directing and writing Babylon Berlin (2017) took his interest in ensemble storytelling into television and back to Berlin, in a 1920s setting. The criticism of The Light (2025) as overlong and uneven makes the discipline of his breakthrough worth remembering. We value the care that kept Lola’s problem clear amid the experiments. Tom Tykwer is a German film director, screenwriter and composer. He was born on 23 May 1965 in Wuppertal, Germany.
He is best known for directing, writing and composing the score for Run Lola Run (1998). His other notable works include directing The Princess and the Warrior (2000), Heaven (2002), Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006), The International (2009) and co-directing Cloud Atlas (2012) with the Wachowskis. He co-created the television series Babylon Berlin (2017–) and directed episodes of Sense8 (2015–2018).
