Tommy Lister Jr. made bullies physically convincing, but he was worth more than another threatening entrance. We rate him most when a film lets his deep voice and imposing build suggest someone capable of taking charge without throwing a punch.

A shaved head, a muscular build and a deep voice: Tommy Lister Jr. could look like trouble without much help from a script. His early guard and bodyguard parts made obvious use of that, and the repeated casting as bullies was hardly surprising. The weakness was in giving him parts that treated his appearance as sufficient characterisation. He could make those characters convincing, but a film could ask him for more.
The early work led to Zeus, opposite Hulk Hogan in No Holds Barred (1989), and a brief spell in professional wrestling under the same name. Alongside Ice Cube in Friday (1995), his neighbourhood bully Deebo became his defining part. That explains his reputation without accounting for everything he could do. Luc Besson's The Fifth Element (1997) cast him as President Lindberg, a calm authority figure outside the usual heavy's job. We warmed to him here because Lindberg's composure let us relax around an actor so often employed to make people nervous.
We recommend Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown (1997) for Pam Grier and Robert Forster first; Lister's contribution as the bail bondsman Winston is a supporting one. It slows down and listens, a welcome setting for an actor usually asked to supply immediate menace, although the film is a good half hour too long. David Steiman's Santa's Slay (2005) casts him as a gas station attendant in a Christmas horror comedy. We enjoy that film's festive bad taste and bright storybook look, while recognising how thin its central joke is. Bill Goldberg's Santa is the main attraction there; neither film should be recommended chiefly for Lister, but both are worth an evening on their own terms.
The brief supporting turn in The Dark Knight (2008) gives him moral authority without requiring much screen time. As Finnick, the diminutive fox he voiced in Zootopia (2016), he finds comedy in the mismatch between his voice and the character's size. These were useful alternatives to asking him to intimidate somebody again. For a less predictable introduction, try The Fifth Element and let him be reassuring for a change.

Tommy Lister Jr., also known as Tom Lister Jr. or Tiny Lister, was an American character actor and former professional wrestler. Standing 6 ft 5 in tall, he frequently played imposing or menacing figures in film and television over a career spanning four decades.
He made his feature debut in Runaway Train (1985) and gained wider recognition for roles including Deebo in Friday (1995) and its sequels, President Lindberg in The Fifth Element (1997), and Winston in Jackie Brown (1997). Lister also voiced Finnick in Zootopia (2016) and appeared in The Dark Knight (2008). Earlier he had a brief wrestling career as Zeus, including a match with Hulk Hogan.
Born Thomas Duane Lister Jr. on 24 June 1958 in Compton, California, he died on 10 December 2020 in Marina del Rey, California, aged 62.
