Toni Servillo makes a small change of expression count, particularly when playing men whose authority gives us reason to worry. We rate his restraint more highly than the flourishes his films sometimes put around him.

A small change in Toni Servillo’s face can make us reconsider the man we are watching. His physical control is especially effective when he plays morally dubious men, making an expression worth inspecting. Matteo Garrone’s Gomorrah (2008) gives him Franco, a criminal in the toxic-waste business, within a crowded account of organised crime. It is a useful place to start with an actor whose reputation also rests on the more stylised films he makes with Paolo Sorrentino.
Franco’s business matters to the effect: toxic waste gives criminality an ugly, practical form, without the attractions of gangster glamour. We were frightened by Gomorrah because it made organised crime seem so ordinary, and Franco belongs to that ordinariness. Garrone does not make following all these lives easy; the crowded storytelling sometimes leaves us struggling to keep up. But Servillo’s chilling contribution sits within a film whose anger and performances earn that effort, rather than asking us to admire a criminal simply for being interesting.
Sorrentino gave him his first lead in L’uomo in più (2001), followed by the introspective Titta Di Girolamo in The Consequences of Love (2004). Il Divo (2008), alongside Gomorrah, brought his international breakthrough. He can be flamboyant with Sorrentino, but the smaller movements remain worth watching. His work with directors centres on character psychology rather than strict imitation, which helps explain why that control need not become stiffness.
In The Great Beauty (2013), his jaded writer Jep Gambardella gives Sorrentino’s rich images a grounded human presence. The reservation is with the surroundings: Loro (2018) is a reminder that stylistic excess can obscure an actor’s work, however much control he brings to it. Their collaboration continues through La Grazia (2025), with another restrained performance. We would start with Gomorrah, then turn to Sorrentino; Servillo does not need an elaborate setting to be worth watching.
Biography
Toni Servillo, also credited as Marco Antonio Servillo or Tony Servillo, is an Italian actor and theatrical director. Born on 25 January 1959 in Afragola, Campania, he began his career in theatre in the 1970s, founding the Teatro Studio di Caserta in 1977 and later collaborating with groups including Falso Movimento and Teatri Uniti.
He made his film debut in Morte di un matematico napoletano (1992) and gained wider recognition with roles in Paolo Sorrentino's The Consequences of Love (2004) and Il Divo (2008), as well as Matteo Garrone's Gomorrah (2008), in which he played Franco. Servillo has frequently worked with Sorrentino, appearing as Jep Gambardella in The Great Beauty (2013) and Silvio Berlusconi in Loro (2018). He has also directed opera productions.
Servillo is the brother of musician Peppe Servillo. He has received multiple David di Donatello awards and two European Film Awards for Best Actor.
