Biography
Valeria Golino is an Italian actress and director. Born in Naples on 22 October 1965, she began working as a model in her teens before making her screen debut in Lina Wertmüller’s Scherzo del destino in agguato dietro l’angolo come un brigante da strada (1983). She rose to prominence in Italy with Storia d’amore (1986), for which she won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival.
Golino gained international recognition with roles in Rain Man (1988), Hot Shots! (1991) and Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993). She has appeared in films including Leaving Las Vegas (1995), Frida (2002), Human Capital (2013) and Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019). She has twice won the Volpi Cup and received multiple David di Donatello, Nastro d’Argento and Ciak d’oro awards. Golino made her directorial debut with Miele (2013) and has since directed Euforia (2018). In 2024 she appeared as Yakinthi Callas in Maria.
