Biography

Yangzom Brauen is a Swiss-Tibetan director and writer. Born on 18 April 1980 in Bern, Switzerland, she is the daughter of ethnologist Martin Brauen and artist Sonam Dolma Brauen. She began her career as an actress, appearing in Swiss and German television as well as films including Æon Flux (2005) and Pandorum (2009).

Brauen transitioned to directing with the short film Born in Battle (2015), which won the audience award at the Max Ophüls Preis and received the CICT-UNESCO Enrico Fulchignoni Award and UNESCO Gandhi Medal. She has since directed numerous television episodes, including on Law & Order (2022–2023), Station 19 (2020–2023), 9-1-1: Lone Star (2022–2024), NCIS: Hawaiʻi (2021–2024) and FBI (2021–2026). She is also the author of the memoir Across Many Mountains (2009).

Brauen remains active in the Tibetan freedom movement.
