Biography
Arthur Hornblow Jr. (1893–1976) was an American film producer. The son of a writer and editor of Theatre Magazine, he graduated from Dartmouth College and New York Law School before serving in counter-intelligence during the First World War. He began his career as a Broadway producer, with successes including The Cardboard Lover, before moving to Hollywood in 1927 as a production supervisor for Samuel Goldwyn.
At Paramount he produced numerous films, including screwball comedies such as Easy Living (1937) and Midnight (1939), and gave Billy Wilder his first directing credit on The Major and the Minor (1942). He later worked at MGM, producing Gaslight (1944) and The Asphalt Jungle (1950). As an independent producer in the 1950s he made Oklahoma! (1955) and Witness for the Prosecution (1957). Four of his films received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture. He co-authored several children's books with his wife, the former actress Leonora Schinasi.
