Biography

Barbara Ling was an American production designer whose career spanned more than four decades. She began in theatre, designing sets and lighting for over 200 stage, opera and musical productions, before moving into film with lighting work on the 1981 special The Pee-Wee Herman Show. Her screen credits include The Doors (1991), Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), Falling Down (1993), Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997).

Ling won the Academy Award for Best Production Design, shared with set decorator Nancy Haigh, for her work on Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood (2019). She also served as production designer on A Man Called Otto (2022) and the 2026 film Michael. She died on 9 July 2026 in Santa Barbara, California.
