Biography
Charles Brackett was an American screenwriter and film producer. Born Charles William Brackett in Saratoga Springs, New York, on 26 November 1892, he died on 9 March 1969.
He collaborated with Billy Wilder on sixteen films. Their joint screenplays include The Lost Weekend (1945) and Sunset Boulevard (1950); Brackett also produced the latter. Other credits include screenplays for Ninotchka (1939), Ball of Fire (1941), Niagara (1953) and Titanic (1953).
Brackett was president of the Screen Writers Guild (1938–1939) and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (1949–1955). He received Academy Awards for the screenplays of The Lost Weekend, Sunset Boulevard and Titanic, and an honorary Oscar in 1958.
