Biography

Christopher Hampton is a British playwright, screenwriter and translator. He was born on 26 January 1946 in Faial, Azores, Portugal, and studied French and German at New College, Oxford.

He is known for his stage play Les Liaisons Dangereuses and its 1988 film adaptation Dangerous Liaisons, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. His other screenplays include Atonement (2007), The Father (2020) and The Son (2022). He has also directed films such as Carrington (1995).

Hampton was appointed CBE in 1999 and knighted in 2020 for services to drama. He has received two Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay.
