Biography
Colleen Rose Dewhurst was a Canadian-American actress. Born in Montréal, Québec, she trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and made her professional stage debut in the early 1950s.
She became known for her interpretations of Eugene O’Neill’s plays on Broadway and off-Broadway, winning two Tony Awards. Her film and television roles included Mrs Hall in Annie Hall (1977), Henrietta Dodd in The Dead Zone (1983), Marilla Cuthbert in the 1985 television adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and its sequels, and Estelle Whittier in Dying Young (1991). She also served as president of the Actors’ Equity Association from 1985 until her death in 1991.
Dewhurst received four Primetime Emmy Awards for her television work.
