Biography
Dorothy Atkinson is an English actress and singer. Born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, she began her career in theatre, appearing in several plays by Alan Ayckbourn at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough. She has worked extensively on stage in the UK and made her Broadway debut in a 2010 revival of Brief Encounter.
Atkinson is known for her collaborations with director Mike Leigh. She played Jessie Bond in the 1999 film Topsy-Turvy, appeared in All or Nothing (2002), and portrayed Hannah Danby in Mr. Turner (2014), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival; she received a BIFA nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the role. Other film credits include Chatroom (2010) and The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (2021).
Her television work includes roles in London's Burning, Call the Midwife, Mum as Pauline, Pennyworth as Mary Pennyworth, and All Creatures Great and Small as Diana Brompton. She is married to actor Martin Savage.
