Biography
Elizabeth Haffenden (18 April 1906 – 29 May 1976) was a British costume designer. She trained at Croydon School of Art and the Royal College of Art, and began her career in theatre before moving into film in the 1930s.
She served as head of the costume department at Gainsborough Studios from 1942 to 1949, designing for most of the studio’s melodramas of the period. From the late 1950s she worked frequently with Joan Bridge; their collaborations included Ben-Hur (1959), The Sundowners (1960), A Man for All Seasons (1966) and The Day of the Jackal (1973).
Haffenden won Academy Awards for Best Costume Design for Ben-Hur (1959) and A Man for All Seasons (1966), and a BAFTA Award for the latter. Other notable credits include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) and Fiddler on the Roof (1971).
