Biography
Erich Nitzschmann was a German cinematographer. He began training as a camera assistant at Decla-Bioscop (later Babelsberg studios) in February 1916 and completed it in December 1919. He worked as an assistant and second cameraman on numerous silent films, including Fritz Lang's Destiny (1921), for which he shot the medieval German section.
From 1926 he served as chief cameraman on several features but returned to assistant roles at Tobis from 1930 to 1941, except in 1936 when he was one of the camera team on Leni Riefenstahl's Olympia Part One: Festival of the Nations and Olympia Part Two: Festival of Beauty (both 1938). After the Second World War he joined DEFA in 1946 and photographed many documentaries.
Nitzschmann was born on 13 February 1901 in Danzig (now Gdańsk) and died on 16 January 1980 in Potsdam.
