Biography
Franz Planer (also credited as Frank Planer, Frank F. Planer and Franz F. Planer) was an Austrian-American cinematographer. Born on 29 March 1894 in Karlsbad, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary (now Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic), he trained as a photographer in Vienna and began working in films in Germany in the late 1910s. He shot numerous European productions before emigrating to the United States in 1937.
In Hollywood he photographed more than 130 films. His credits include Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948), Roman Holiday (1953), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), The Big Country (1958), The Unforgiven (1960), Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) and The Children's Hour (1961). He was nominated for five Academy Awards for cinematography but did not win. Planer died on 10 January 1963 in Hollywood, California.
