Biography
Jean-Marc Barr is a French-American actor and director. He was born on 27 September 1960 in Bitburg, Germany, to a French mother and an American father serving in the US Air Force. He studied philosophy at the University of California, Los Angeles, the Paris Conservatoire and the Sorbonne, before training in drama at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he met his future wife, pianist and composer Irina Dečermić.
Barr began working in theatre in France in 1986 and appeared in films including Hope and Glory (1987) and Maurice (1987). He is known for his role as Jacques Mayol in The Big Blue (1988) and for frequent collaborations with Lars von Trier, including Europa (1991), Breaking the Waves (1996) as Terry, Dancer in the Dark (2000) and Dogville (2003). He has also directed, written and produced films.
